Organizations with asset-intensive operations in the oil and gas sector depend on their maintenance data for their operational decisions. However, in many organizations, maintenance data is stored as fragmented free text, using an inconsistent taxonomy and incomplete history. The quality of this information affects the quality of the decisions made by the organization and thus affects operational safety, asset availability, and operational costs. In this article, we discuss how information quality influences asset management and how the information affects the organization’s choices and the resulting unplanned downtime, retraining of personnel, and safety risks. To improve the informational foundation for asset management, we present a number of evaluation criteria for maintenance information and, by extension, for organizational decision-making.
